Welcome to Capture Japan - a fun, interactive classroom game designed to get students speaking, thinking, and competing while learning English!
Here's a step-by-step guide to help you set up and play the game effectively:
👥 Group Setup
- Divide students into pairs or small groups - maximum of 12 players or teams.
- Assign a color to each team using markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
- Add these team colors to your game map to track captured prefectures.
📄 Prepare the Worksheet
- Hand out a worksheet to each team.
- The worksheet should be blank or have space for writing sentences.
- Avoid putting questions on the worksheet so all teams respond to the same prompt during each round.
🧍♂️ Team Representatives
- Ask each group to choose one representative who will submit the worksheet each round.
- This helps you manage submissions smoothly when the game gets exciting!
📝 Sentence Challenge
- Each round, give students a grammar point to use.
- Ask them to make a sentence using that grammar point.
- If possible, students should include the name of the prefecture they want to capture in their sentence.
🔸 Example:
Grammar: Past tense
Sentence: "I visited Hokkaido last summer.
⏱️ Time Limit
- Set a timer (e.g. 2 minutes) for students to write their sentences.
- This keeps the game fast-paced and exciting!
✅ Sentence Check & Capture
- Check each team's sentence or ask them to read it aloud.
- If the sentence is correct and the prefecture is unclaimed/FREE, award it to their team.
- If the sentence is incorrect, allow them to fix it if time permits.
✊ Rock, Scissors, Paper Battle
- If two teams want the same prefecture, they'll face off with a game of Rock, Scissors, Paper.
- The winner captures the prefecture!
🏆 Winning the Game
- The game ends after a set number of rounds or when time is up.
- The team with the most captured prefectures is the winner!
